More on Geopolitics
Only a couple years ago, it was still necessary to convince people that geopolitics mattered. Today, no such effort is required: war, sanctions, supply chain disruptions, and climate policies ensure geopolitics is part of daily conversation.
Yet, the challenge has shifted.
With "geopolitics" invoked everywhere, it has become harder to separate rhetoric from research, and opinion from analysis. This section of our website was created to meet that challenge. Here we gather work that combines accessibility with rigor: student theses, expert talks, and practical tools.
Together they show that geopolitics is not just about breaking news, but about long-term trends that can be studied, compared, and understood. The Index itself, built on six sub-dimensions and covering 147 countries between 2011 and 2022, is the backbone. These additional resources illustrate its applications and expand its scope.
For readers, this means context beyond the headlines. And if you are a Bocconi master student, this page offers a glimpse into the Geopolitics for Business course that you may choose as an elective, and what type of research you may produce in the field of geopolitics.
The importance of a geopolitical risk index
Discussions around geopolitics are getting increasingly more popular in business circles. A recent PwC poll found that 41% of executives in Ireland view geopolitics as the top threat to their business. The trend is not unique to Ireland. It is global, and in some sectors; geopolitics is a key variable in determining the sustainability of a company.
In our globalised world, deciding where to invest has become a crucial question. But how can companies assess geopolitical risk beyond headlines?
Companies are more used to dealing with domestic political risk than threats coming from international relations. Through the Geopolitical Risk Index, we aim to make geopolitics measurable. It offers firms and analysts a practical framework to anticipate disruption and assess exposure across countries and sectors.
Geopolitical Risk Analysis: the GPR Matrix Framework
Geopolitics has become a daily reality for companies, policymakers, and societies worldwide. In this concise but powerful e-book, Professor Andrea Colli defines "geopolitical risk" and how it can be assessed, through a tool called the GPR Matrix.
The framework offers firms and analysts a structured way to evaluate exposure across countries and sectors — going beyond headlines to measurable, actionable insight.
